Salò sits on the western shore of Lake Garda, laying out one of the longest and loveliest promenades on the lake and the old town is an atmospheric ramble away. This tangle of alleys, arcades and piazzas hides away Liberty-style houses, museums and churches – as well as plenty of inviting places to eat and drink. Walking holidays in Salò give you time to explore all of this, as well as the footpaths and ferry routes beyond. Lake Garda greats, including Gardone and Sirmione, are just a scenic boat ride away.
Soak up Salò's relaxed atmosphere
With its scenic spot, holidays in Salò lend themselves to relaxed days of lakeside strolls and watching the world go by with a cappuccino or Aperol spritz in hand. Things get livelier on Saturdays, when the market turns up. It’s the ideal place to pick up a picnic – or to simply marvel at the huge lemons, rounds of mountain cheese and cured meats that stack the stalls. On a warm summer evening, follow your ears to the bars along the lake; they often host live bands.
Wander through the history books
If you think the square on the waterfront is reminiscent of Venice, you’re not mistaken – Salò spent a few centuries as part of the Venetian Republic. Meanwhile, a walk through the lanes and piazzas of the old town is a walk through the history books. You can learn more about town’s past at the MuSa museum, housed in the old monastery and church. Exhibits chronicle everything from archaeological finds to Salò’s dark years as the HQ of Mussolini’s Italian Social Republic.
Walk along Lake Garda's promenades
The promenade should be your first stop in Salò – an irresistible sweep of cypress trees, cafés and beaches. Catch a boat to the palatial villa and garden on Isola del Garda. Or to Gardone Riviera, where the eclectic Heller Botanical Garden showcases sculptures by artists as wide-ranging as Rodin and pop art maestro Keith Haring. Southerly towns such as castle-crowned Sirmione are in easy reach, too, and Bardolino and Garda are a hop across the water. Disembark at Peschiera or Desenzano for trains that connect to Verona.
Explore the Riviera Bresciana
Salò is the starting line for many hikes. Follow the Path of the Pine Grove (Sentiero della Pineta) through Alto Garda Bresciano Park and up Mount San Bartolomeo for spectacular views over Lake Garda. The Riviera Bresciana starts in Salò too. You can walk to Gargnano in half a day – or in a full day, if pausing for lazy lunches and to take in the panoramas en route. This walk swaps the main towns for serene forest paths and village roads.
