The Quinta Splendida is a wonderfully-restored 19th century mansion in a tranquil oasis of 30,000m² of breath-taking botanical gardens. It’s only a short distance from the small town of Caniço but with everything you need onsite, you’ll want to stay and enjoy this botanical paradise.

Enjoy walking in beautiful botanic gardens

Is there anything more serene than an afternoon stroll in the Madeiran sun surrounded by beautiful flowers, vibrant colours and the sweet scent of tropical flora? We don’t think so and that’s why we love the Quinta Splendida. Its extensive and truly unique gardens have been a passion project for the owner for over 30 years and are classed as Botanical Gardens; a title bestowed by the Madeiran Government in recognition of the hard work and dedication gone into them. Try to spot the different species of plants; there are over a thousand varieties to see in this tropical paradise.

Delicious dining experiences

The hotel offers a great variety of restaurants and bars on-site (payable locally). We love to head to the Siddhartha bar on sunny days and grab a drink and a small bite to eat next to the outdoor swimming pool, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the sea views. In the evening, head to the Globe bar and treat yourself to a drink from its extensive cocktail menu – there's live music to enjoy three times a week and more in summer. To dine, you’ll find a Thai restaurant with a variety of Asian flavours on offer as well as the Galeria restaurant which has a range of Mediterranean inspired dishes.

Relax on holiday in one of the largest Spas on the island

Treat tired legs after a day of walking the Madeiran trails and indulge in a little TLC by heading to the hotel spa and wellness centre (available at a daily supplement for some room types). You can enjoy a variety of treatments and massages (bookable and payable locally) or take a dip in the indoor pool. There is also a whirlpool, relaxation area and our recommendation - head for the outdoor terrace and soak up those magnificent sea views.

Canico

  • A peaceful village, great for those wanting to escape the city
  • Wander down to the cliffs of Caniço with their beautiful ocean views
  • Catch the bus to Funchal for a day of exploring the city

Caniço is more charming than a chocolate on a pillow. It’s much quieter than Funchal, so if you want to switch off a bit and explore the island – this is the place for you.

There’s a small square where you can have a look around the lovely shops and restaurants. Go a little further down to the coast for the promenade to get sea views and sunny bathing platforms.

Love diving and snorkelling? You’re in the perfect spot…

Walking holidays in Caniço

There’s a huge amount of activities in Madeira so choose what takes your fancy – the Levadas walking trails, boat trips, dolphin watching, festivals, events and lots of lovely local food.

The Levada walking trails have made the island a popular destination for walking. These ancient irrigation channels carry water across Madeira and in turn have created a network of walking trails. These levada trails run across the centre of the island so don't come into the town centre. For the best experience we always recommend walking with a professional guide in Madeira as trails can be complicated to navigate plus we love all the tips and local insights you get from walking with a guide. You can book onto our optional, included guided walks that take place twice a week and you can book up to two per holiday (subject to availability) but if you're wanting to walk some more, take a look at our payable excursions.

Water babies, walk this way

The Garajau Partial Natural Reserve is a marine reserve that was set up to keep underwater life thriving. You’ll be dropping into crystal-clear waters to see giant manta rays and the dusky grouper – among many others.

Pop to the top

The Cristo Rei lookout point never fails to impress – there’s the incredible view but you’ll definitely be getting your phone out for a shot of the dramatic Cristo Rei statue.

Basecamp for exploration

Caniço makes a great base for exploring the island and having somewhere relaxing to come back to. If you get the urge to pick up the pace, you can take a quick trip to Funchal for all the perks of city living – there’s a super reliable bus which makes it easy to get to.
