Holidays in Tuscany

Explore rolling hills and medieval cities whilst tasting Italy's best food and wine against a backdrop of rolling Tuscan hills

Discover Tuscany

Tuscany’s landscape is iconic. Medieval towns crown the tops of rolling hills surrounded by vineyards and fields of poppies and sunflowers – it’s hard to imagine anywhere more idyllic. The region really has it all. It’s made for walking, cycling, eating, drinking and sightseeing.

Walking Holidays in Tuscany

From the famous Camino di San Jacopo, a bucket list route for many a keen walker to the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside famous for its Italian Cypress trees and serene sunsets, we love walking in Tuscany which offers a completely different landscape to other walking areas in Italy. With wooded, hilly trails in areas such as the Colle di Buggiano and endless ancient villages and aqueducts to stumble upon, we can't get enough of walking in Tuscany.

Things to do in Tuscany

There’s lots to see and do on a Tuscany holiday. Take a dip in the thermal baths at Montecatini, walk or cycle along Lucca's 16th century walls or try the world-famous Chianti wine at a local vineyard. If relaxation's on the agenda, spend a day on Viareggio’s sandy coast. Get your culture fix with a trip to the region's capital Florence or scope out where the ancient 'palio' races took place in Siena's main piazza.

Activities in Tuscany

If you're a culture and history fanatic like us, then Tuscany is the ideal destination for you. Hop on a train to nearby cities such as Siena, Pisa or Florence and discover a myriad of historical nuggets, or explore the art scene in Florence which is home to more than 40% of the world's artistic masterpieces. Mix up your holiday by heading into the hills for some fantastic walks- experience part of the famous pilgrimage route, the Camino di San Jacopo, or go in search of ancient towns in the Colle di Buggiano. If gazing out at those Tuscan views with a glass of wine in hand is more your speed, then head up to Montecatini Alto in the funicular, for the best panoramas. Alternatively, join our Montecatini Alto guided walk and get your steps in; it's worth it for those views!

Food & Drink in Tuscany

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to wine in Tuscany. There are plenty of famous labels to try – have fun pairing them with the region’s rich dishes and cheeses. We love a classic Chianti but you can push the boat out and go for the renowned Brunello di Montepulciano. For whites, we recommend Vernaccia di San Gimignano - it’s so good it got a mention in Dante’s Divine Comedy. The Tuscan culture is famous for its approach to home-grown, organic produce, and is the ideal place for the avid foodie!

Things to do in Tuscany

Tuscany is a large region with plenty of sights. The cities in the north are the most popular – Florence, Siena, Pisa and Lucca appear on many tourist’s itineraries. Check out the medieval towers of San Gimignano, exploring winding lanes, artisan workshops and cosy trattorias. We love exploring the coast too. You can cycle along miles of promenade or jump on a train as far as Liguria.

Food & drink

The slow food movement is popular in the Tuscan hills and champions high quality, seasonal ingredients and sustainable practices. The Tuscan's apply this to their food and their wine, so you'll be spoilt for choice with fresh home-grown produce local to the area. You’ll find everything from rich rustic ingredients to fine dining. We love panzanella - fresh tomatoes, basil, and balsamic vinegar, tossed together in a salad with homemade bread to soak up the juices.

Activities

Tuscany’s landscape was made for walking. You don’t want to rush those views! The hills around San Gimignano are some of our favourite routes. They can be a little challenging so make sure you’re prepared with detailed maps and plenty of water. There are several great trails from Montecatini which connect it with Montecatini Alto above and there’s some longer routes up and over the hills of Monte di Pescia.
