Arctic adventures and skiing in Pyhä

Located north of the Arctic Circle, Pyhä is a paradise for those seeking an arctic adventure.  The Pyhätunturi Hotel and Ski Inn Apartments have a piste side location, giving you convenient access to the well-groomed ski slopes, where you can enjoy carving down the gentle slopes or venture out onto the incredible off piste areas surrounding the slopes. During your stay you can venture out on one of the many exhilarating Arctic excursions. Embark on a snowmobiling journey through the pristine wilderness, enjoy the thrill of driving your own husky sled ride across snowy trails, or have a go at snowshoeing across the beautiful Pyhä -Lusto National Park.  What makes Pyhä even more special is its incredibly clear skies, making it an ideal resort for witnessing the Northern Lights lighting up the night sky.

Where to stay in Pyhä

We have the choice of accommodation located on the Pyhätunturi fell, plus your 6 day lift pass is included with your stay. All of the accommodation we offer is within a short distance of the ski slopes and lifts - making it a good option for the keen skiers and snowboarders. Choose from staying at the modern Hotel Pyhätunturi with convenient ski in/ ski out access or opt for staying in one of the charming Ski-Inn Apartments - we have a selection of apartments, including the well equipped Pyhälinna apartments, the light and bright Pyhä Suites and the luxurious Pore 55 Kultakero apartment with a private jacuzzi. Guests staying in the hotel and apartments have access to the shared facilities at the Hotel Pyhätunturi, which includes a fitness room, sauna, bar and restaurant.

Beginner skiing in Pyhä 

The resort is perfect for beginners with the majority of the area being suited to those new to the slopes.  You’ll find a wide range of gentle, wide slopes, which are ideal for building confidence and developing your skills in a relaxed setting. The Family Adventure Area is a particularly great place for beginners to get started, the dedicated area has gentle slopes and easy access to lifts, and as you progress, you’ll find a variety of gentle blue runs which allow you to build your confidence. Pyhä has an excellent ski school with experienced instructors to help you progress.

Intermediate skiing in Pyhä

The area is predominantly made up of wide and gentle blue runs are often uncrowded which is perfect for practicing your turns and technique, there are a handful of red runs which offer a bit more of a challenge, as well as two steeper black runs. One of the highlights of skiing at Pyhä is the stunning scenery that surrounds the resort. As you cruise down the mountain, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the arctic landscape. 

Advanced skiing in Pyhä

The slopes at Pyhä are renowned for their natural terrain, featuring a mix of steep, ungroomed sections, deep powder, and winding tree runs—ideal for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The famous Piste Palander black slope, which has hosted several World Cup ski competitions, offers a true test of skill for those seeking a serious challenge. For those eager to explore the backcountry, Pyhä has an extensive network of off-piste trails, making it a paradise for adventurers looking to experience the untouched Arctic wilderness. Huttu-ukko is the area’s only ungroomed slope with its steep terrain and deep powder, it's a haven for thrill-seekers.

Cross-country skiing in Pyhä

With over 150 km of groomed trails across the Pyhä- Luosto area, there's a diverse range of routes which are suitable for all skill levels. If you are just starting out there are some lovely easy routes around the village, plus there are a handful of cosy cafes dotted along the trails for a break or relaxing lunch - Ski Cafe Suonmukka is a lovely little restaurant near the fell centre serving traditional Finnish cuisine. If you want to challenge yourself, take the 35 kilometer route over to Luosto - on the way back you can hop on the SkiBuss.

All drivers must be 18yrs+ and bring a full, valid photographic driver's licence with them to the excursion.

Children must be aged 13 or above and at least 140cm tall to ride as a passenger on a snowmobile, they must be able to touch the foot rest when sat on the snowmobile. Children under this height or aged 5-11yrs will be towed in a sled or pod (unheated) behind the guide. It is not possible for infants (aged 0-4 years) to take part in this excursion. 

Single riders who have purchased a sharing snowmobile may need to upgrade locally to a single driving snowmobile, if a sharing snowmobile is not available.

Things To Do

Food and drink

Pyhä has a lovely range of restaurants dotted around the village, serving classic Finnish cuisine, and international dishes. Up on the Pyhätunturi fell you can enjoy a range of international dishes and Finnish cuisine in the CAMP Kitchen & Bar at the Pyhätunturi Hotel - there's a selection of burgers, steaks and tacos. Popolo is a cosy pizzeria at the Hotel Kultakero serving Italian wood-fired pizzas and pasta dishes. Down in the village there's a range of cosy cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from, including restaurant Huttuhippu which serves simple local cuisine with a range of meats, berries and mushrooms sourced locally - plus there's a good selection of vegan dishes available. 

Most restaurants (Ravintola) are located at the base stations of the lifts, however Restaurant Tsoka at the top of the PyhäExpress is well worth a visit - the views are incredible. Throughout the winter season, you can often enjoy a Northern Lights dinner where you are taken up on a snowmobile or tracked SUV.

Nightlife 

After a day on the slopes Carlsberg House is the place to be, it often has live music, a spacious sun terrace and a great selection of drinks - you can find it next to the Pyhätunturi Hotel at the base of the Polar slope. Alternatively, the CAMP Bar at the Pyhätunturi Hotel is a great spot to catch up with friends and family over a drink. If you are down in the resort centre, Sport Bar Pyhä is known for its karaoke nights and broadcasts major sporting events, you can also find a pool table, dart board, and a jukebox. Hanki Baari often features performances by various artists and DJs, making it an ideal spot for those looking to enjoy live entertainment. 

Shopping 

There's a small mini-market at the Hotel Pyhätunturi where you can pick up essentials, snacks and souvenirs, as well as a winter rental shop. All other services are located around the Pyhä centre, where you can find a large K-Market supermarket with well stocked shelves, a pharmacy, a postal service and alcoholic drinks. The Pyhä Store sells a range of clothing, footwear and outdoor wear. If you are looking to pick up a souvenir to remember your Lapland Adventure, there's a couple of small shops selling handcrafted products in the centre. 

Things to do in Pyhä

If you are not carving down the slopes or enjoying an arctic adventure, there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied.

Pyhä-Luosto Visitor Centre Naava

Learn all about the history, stories, trails, and wonders of Pyha at the Visitor Centre Naava. Get your first taste of the area's deep ravines, high fell tops, and sacred sites of the ancient Forest Sámi people at the free exhibition. There's also a cosy café on site where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with a pastry or a tasty lunch. 

Winter walking 

Experience the serene arctic landscape on foot. Pedestrians can take the scenic PyhäExpress chair lift up and down without skis, up the top there's a scenic 360° viewing platform overlooking the national park. Right behind the scenic lift at the top of Pyhä is the Huttu-Ukko art trail, which contains works based on the history and myths of the region created by local artist Tapio Uusitalo.

Ice karting

Ready, set, go... Race your friends and family around the ice track on a specially designed ice-kart with studded tires. Whether you're a seasoned driver or a first-timer, ice karting offers an adrenaline-pumping challenge as you drift and race on the icy surface.  It is easy to learn to drive, and it is suitable for all drivers over 15 years of age and 150cm tall. Ice karting can be booked locally.

Winter biking 

Fatbikes are a great way to explore the arctic wilderness. During your stay you can explore the 40 kilometres of trails, which are marked with blue signposts, or with blue winter biker symbols. there's varying levels of trails around the resort, although we recommend booking a guided tour so you can see the best of the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Winter biking can be booked locally.
