Skiing and snowboarding in Obergurgl

If you’re looking for guaranteed snow, queue-free modern lifts and immaculate slope grooming then Obergurgl is the place for you. Known as the ‘diamond of the alps’, the majority of our hotels are 4 star and above. As a family resort, many of the hotels offer kids activities and are close to the ski school and lifts.

You’ll have quiet scenic pistes suited to all levels of skiing. There is a great ski school, learning area and child friendly snow park. At a height of 1,927 metres the views in Obergurgl are spectacular.

Where to stay in Obergurgl

We have excellent long standing relationships with all of our hotels in Obergurgl so you can rest assured that you will be taken great care of during your stay. The level of service and facilities here are some of the best in Austria, and many hotels have ski-in, ski-out locations.

The best views of the resort can be enjoyed from the Top Mountain Star 360° bar or the Hohe Mut Alm – where you’ll find the spot known as Tirol’s most beautiful mountain ridge. We recommend a winter hike around the stone pine forest – which became a UNESCO natural treasure in 1963. There is a weekly ski-show, night skiing and tobogganing or why not holiday in style with a helicopter ride or champagne gondola lunch.

Bars and restaurants in Obergurgl

With a community of 400 locals working in the traditional pubs, parasol covered bars and rustic mountain huts –expect lederhosen’s, large beer steins and service with a smile. Obergurgl is a small resort meaning you’re never too far from friends or family on the slopes.

No trip to Obergurgl would be complete without a trip to the famous après Nederhütte, located half way up the mountain. Be sure to try the sticky ribs, they’re a specialty that shouldn’t be missed. Once you’ve had a bite to eat. It’s time to party – the house band and staff will be the first to demand you get up on the benches for a good old knees up.

Every Tuesday we offer a wine tasting with one of Austria's top sommelier, Maximilian Steiner. Taste some of Austria's best wines in the beautiful cellar at the Austria Gourmet & Wine Hotel, open to both residence and none residence. You can pre-book or speak to our team in resort to book.

Beginners Skiing in Obergurgl

There are now two beginners areas, one in the village centre near the Rosskar lift and one at the bottom end of the village near the Festkogel lift. The Obergurgl ski school has an excellent reputation and all its instructors speak English. Bobos Miniclub will keep your little ones occupied with plenty of fun in the snow. The blue pistes in Hochgurgl area a great place to ‘find your ski legs’ again and great for middle beginners.

Intermediates Skiing in Obergurgl

The whole area, the Rosskar, Hohe Mut or Festkogl (Obergurgl) to the Wurmkogl (Hochgurgl) has an extensive choice for skiers who like long, spacious blue and red runs. Blue runs 5 and 6 are good runs for low intermediates, and red run 7 and the runs by the Plattach chairlift in Obergurgl are good for better intermediates.

Advanced Skiing in Obergurgl

There are some challenging black runs and good moguls on the unprepared ski routes or book a guide to explore the deep powder off-piste skiing on the Hohe Mut in Obergurgl. A day trip over to the glacier in Sölden is well worth it. As an experienced skier or boarder this area presents an exciting challenge. You can get lost exploring Sölden’s 2 glaciers and three peaks over 300m.

Snowboarding Obergurgl

Pistes are generally suitable for snowboarding with a selection of jumps on the Festkogl area.

Our favourite run

'Pistes from top of the Wurmkogel lift in Hochgurgl. Relaxing cruisy blue runs, with the treat at the top – the two Wurmkogel lifts take you the Top Mountain Star, a mountain restaurant and look-out point with one of the most glorious views, looking south across the Italian border to the rose-coloured crags of the Dolomites. Simply sensational on a clear day. From there, you can ski down all the way to Untergurgl, so it's a lovely long, scenic run.' (Neil Lodge, Product Manager Austria)
